What a Junior Engineer does
Junior Engineer (JE) is the entry-level technical supervisory post in Railways, CPWD, state PWD/irrigation departments and defence engineering services, responsible for site supervision, quality checks and preparing technical estimates under an Assistant Engineer. Eligibility is a diploma or degree in the relevant engineering discipline — civil, mechanical or electrical.
RRB JE and SSC JE both run a two-stage Computer Based Test — a general Stage 1 all disciplines take together, and a discipline-specific technical Stage 2 — followed by document verification and, for some departments, a medical exam. JE is the standard first rung on the government engineering career ladder, with promotion paths toward Assistant Engineer and Executive Engineer over a career.
