A Polytechnic Diploma sits between ITI and a full engineering degree, and is the qualification most central and state departments require for Junior Engineer (JE) posts — one level below the Assistant Engineer roles reserved for B.Tech holders. RRB JE, SSC JE (for departments accepting diploma holders), state PWD and irrigation departments, and municipal engineering wings all recruit diploma holders into supervisory technical roles rather than trade roles. DRDO and ISRO also run separate Diploma Trainee tracks distinct from their B.Tech-level Scientist/Engineer entries.

Selection for JE-level posts typically runs a two-stage Computer Based Test — a general-aptitude Stage 1 that all candidates take, followed by a technical Stage 2 specific to the engineering discipline (civil, mechanical, electrical) — before document verification and, for some departments, a medical exam.
