A Post Graduate (Master's) degree is the qualification behind officer-grade posts one level above what a bachelor's degree alone qualifies for: SSC CGL's Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer posts require a postgraduate degree specifically (commerce or a related field), RBI's Grade B officer recruitment is open to postgraduates across disciplines, and state PSC lecturer and college-level teaching posts require a Master's degree in the subject to be taught, alongside UGC NET qualification.

Officer-grade postgraduate recruitment typically adds a Group Discussion and/or Personal Interview stage after the written exam — RBI Grade B, for instance, runs a two-phase written exam followed by an interview, a structure closer to bank PO recruitment than to SSC's largely objective format. For teaching posts, UGC NET (or a state-level SET) functions the same way CTET does for school teachers: it is a separate qualifying exam, distinct from the postgraduate degree itself, and is required before a candidate is even eligible to apply for most Assistant Professor posts. Postgraduate qualification also unlocks a small number of PSU management and specialist-officer posts that explicitly exclude bachelor's-only candidates, generally at a materially higher starting pay grade than the graduate-level equivalent.
