UPSSSC PET

The UPSSSC Preliminary Eligibility Test is the single screening exam standing in front of almost every Group C recruitment run by the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission. It replaced the separate preliminary paper each recruitment used to hold: rather than a first paper per vacancy, a candidate sits one common test, is given a score, and quotes that score when applying to any main examination the Commission advertises.

Nothing is recruited through the PET itself. It produces no merit list for a post and no appointment — only a score and a rank, which decide whether you may apply at all and whether you are called to the mains. A candidate without a valid PET score cannot apply to those recruitments however well qualified they otherwise are, which is why the test is treated as compulsory rather than optional preparation.

The paper is a 100-mark objective test on OMR sheets: 100 questions in two hours, with one-fourth of a mark deducted for each wrong answer. Its syllabus is general rather than post-specific — Indian history and the national movement, geography, the Indian economy, the Constitution and public administration, general science, elementary arithmetic, general Hindi and general English, logical reasoning, current affairs and general awareness, along with short comprehension, graph and table interpretation sets.

A PET score is valid for one year from the date the result is declared. A lapsed score locks you out of applications that open later in the year, so the test is worth sitting in every cycle you remain eligible for, whatever your score in the last one.
