ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate holders are recruited specifically for skilled trade and technician posts, a category central PSUs and Railways treat as distinct from both 12th-pass clerical roles and diploma-level engineering roles. Indian Railways runs a dedicated RRB Technician exam for ITI holders, defence PSUs such as BHEL, HAL and BEL recruit ITI-qualified Technician Apprentices, and state electricity boards regularly hire Linemen and Wiremen at this qualification. The armed forces also route ITI-certified candidates into technical trade entries distinct from the general-duty stream.

Because ITI is itself a trade-specific qualification, recruitment tests are usually trade-specific too: a written paper on the relevant trade theory (electrical, fitter, welder, etc.) combined with a practical skill or trade test, rather than the general-aptitude papers that dominate 10th/12th-level recruitment. Many ITI-based government entries, particularly PSU apprenticeships, start as a fixed-term Apprentice or Trainee period under the Apprentices Act before conversion to a regular post is considered, which is worth planning for financially since apprentice stipends are lower than a confirmed technician's pay. Candidates from a specific trade should prioritise notifications that name their trade explicitly, since a mismatch between ITI trade and posted vacancy is a common cause of rejection at the document verification stage.
