Selection generally follows one of two patterns. Uniformed and physically demanding posts (Army, Police, Forest Guard) require a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test alongside a written exam covering General Knowledge, Arithmetic and Reasoning, followed by a medical examination. GDS recruitment is unusual in having no written exam at all — selection is purely on 10th-marks-based merit, which makes it one of the least competitive government routes available at this level. Railway Group D uses a Computer Based Test followed by a Physical Efficiency Test. Because volumes are high and eligibility is broad, candidates at this level should expect intense competition even without a written exam stage.
