Medical Officer is the entry-level doctor post in government health services, state health departments, ESIC, Railways, and central health services via UPSC CMS, responsible for outpatient care, emergency treatment and public health duties at a government hospital or primary health centre. Eligibility is an MBBS degree with registration under the National Medical Commission or the relevant State Medical Council, and, for some posts, completion of a mandatory rural or rotating internship.

Selection for CMS-track posts is a written exam covering general medicine and allied subjects; many state-level Medical Officer posts instead use direct interview and merit-list selection without a separate written stage. NEET-PG is not required for this entry-level post but is the gateway to postgraduate Specialist posts above it.
