Stenographer posts, recruited through SSC's dedicated Stenographer exam and various state secretariats, support senior officers by taking dictation in shorthand and transcribing it accurately at a required speed, alongside general clerical support. Eligibility is 12th pass, but the post is unusual among clerical roles in requiring a demonstrable shorthand speed — typically 80–100 words per minute depending on Grade C or D — tested directly rather than inferred from qualifications.

Selection is a written exam on general awareness, reasoning and English, followed by a Skill Test in shorthand dictation and transcription — a stage many otherwise-qualified candidates fail without dedicated stenography practice. Because the skill test is a hard bottleneck, competition is lower than for general clerk-tier posts with the same educational eligibility.
