What a Apprentice does

Apprentice is a fixed-term training post under the Apprentices Act, offered by Railways, defence PSUs (BHEL, HAL) and other central PSUs to ITI, diploma or degree holders — Trade, Technician and Graduate Apprentice categories differ by qualification — providing hands-on training rather than a permanent government role. Eligibility depends entirely on the specific apprenticeship category: a trade certificate for Trade Apprentice, a diploma for Technician Apprentice, a degree for Graduate Apprentice.

Selection is usually a straightforward merit list based on qualifying marks, sometimes followed by document verification and a medical check, without the multi-tier competitive exam typical of regular posts. Apprentices receive a fixed monthly stipend rather than a pay-scale salary, and completion does not automatically guarantee a regular post — though many PSUs give completed apprentices a preference or an easier entry route into regular recruitment.
