Assistant Engineer (AE) sits one level above Junior Engineer, recruited through state PSC engineering service exams and select PSU degree-entry schemes, with responsibility for design review, project execution oversight and managing a team of JEs. Eligibility is a full engineering degree in the relevant discipline — diploma holders are not eligible for direct AE recruitment in most states.
Selection runs a dedicated state-level technical written exam, distinct from GATE unlike PSU Engineer entries, followed by an interview and document verification. AE is typically a gazetted or semi-gazetted post depending on the state, carrying meaningfully higher pay and authority than JE.
