What a Sub Inspector does
Sub Inspector (SI) is a supervisory rank above Constable and Head Constable, recruited through SSC CPO (for Delhi Police and CAPFs) and state police SI exams, responsible for leading a police station beat, first-response investigation and supervising constabulary staff. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree plus physical standards similar to, though sometimes with different cutoffs than, Constable recruitment.
Selection is multi-stage: a written Tier I/Tier II exam, Physical Efficiency Test, and a detailed medical examination, with document verification at the end. SI is a materially better-paid and higher-authority post than Constable, and many serving Constables also compete for SI through limited departmental promotion quotas alongside direct-entry candidates.
