Income Tax Department Vacancies: Every Post, Route and Eligibility Rule

Search for an "Income Tax Department vacancy" and you get a confusing mix of results: a graduate-level exam with lakhs of applicants, a ten-vacancy notice from a single city office, and a civil services rank that takes years to reach. Search for an "Income Tax Inspector vacancy" instead and the confusion is sharper still: the post is real and recruited every year, but no notification is ever issued under that name. All three are real, and they are filled through completely different processes. This guide maps the whole picture — every Income Tax post the department fills, the route that fills it, who it is open to, what it pays, and how to make sure you see the notification while the window is still open.

Who actually recruits for the Income Tax Department

The department sits under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. Operationally it is split into 18 regions, each headed by a Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax — Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Bhopal (MP & CG), Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Kochi, Guwahati, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh.

That structure explains why vacancy news about the department arrives from two very different directions:

  • Centralised recruitment. The bulk of the Income Tax posts on offer — Inspector, Tax Assistant, Stenographer, MTS — are not advertised by the department at all. The Staff Selection Commission runs the exams and allocates successful candidates to CBDT, and UPSC fills the Group A officer cadre. You apply to SSC or UPSC, not to the Income Tax Department.
  • Regional recruitment. A handful of categories are notified directly by a regional Pr. CCIT office, on that region's own website, for posts in that region only. Sports quota vacancies, departmental canteen posts, compassionate appointments and consultant engagements all work this way. These are small, quiet, and easy to miss — which is exactly why they are worth watching.

What opens each year, and roughly when

There is no single Income Tax Department recruitment calendar, but the pattern across a year is reasonably stable:

  • SSC CGL — one cycle a year, the main graduate-level intake for Income Tax Inspector and Tax Assistant.
  • SSC MTS — one cycle a year, matriculation-level, filling MTS posts across central departments including CBDT offices.
  • SSC Stenographer — one cycle a year for Stenographer Grade C and D, feeding Stenographer posts in the department.
  • UPSC Civil Services — one cycle a year; the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) is one of the services allotted on the basis of rank and preference.
  • Sports quota notices — issued region by region through the year, with no fixed month. Several regions typically advertise in any given year, each with its own window.
  • Canteen and other local Group C notices — irregular, region-specific, and usually open for only two to four weeks.

Exact dates shift every cycle. Never plan around a date you read on any aggregator, this site included — confirm it on the notification itself.

Route 1: SSC CGL — Income Tax Inspector and Tax Assistant

This is the route most people mean when they search for an Income Tax Department vacancy or an Income Tax Inspector vacancy, and it fills two very different posts.

Income Tax Inspector vacancies

A Group B non-gazetted post at Pay Level 7 (₹44,900–₹1,42,400). Eligibility is a bachelor's degree in any discipline and an age of 18 to 30 on the notification's cutoff date. Unlike the Inspector posts under CBIC or the Sub-Inspector posts in CBI and NIA, the Income Tax Inspector post carries no physical standards or physical efficiency test — a point candidates routinely get wrong when comparing CGL posts.

Work is split across wings: assessment (scrutinising returns and issuing notices), TDS (compliance by deductors), and the investigation wing (survey and search operations, where Inspectors are part of the field team). Much of the assessment work is now conducted through the faceless system, so a posting may involve very little face-to-face contact with taxpayers.

Tax Assistant

A Group C post at Pay Level 4 (₹25,500–₹81,100), also requiring a bachelor's degree, with an age band of 18 to 27. The one extra hurdle is a data entry speed test — a qualifying requirement of 8,000 key depressions per hour. Candidates who ignore typing practice until the shortlist is out are the ones who lose the post at this stage.

How the exam works

SSC CGL runs in two tiers, both computer-based:

  • Tier I — 100 objective questions for 200 marks in 60 minutes, split equally across General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension, with negative marking. It is a screening stage.
  • Tier II — Paper I is compulsory for every post, in two sessions: mathematical abilities and reasoning, then English and general awareness, followed by a computer knowledge module and the data entry speed test. Additional papers apply only to statistics and accounts-track posts, not to Inspector or Tax Assistant.

Your final merit rank plus your stated post preference order decide whether you land in the Income Tax Department or elsewhere — you cannot apply for "Income Tax Inspector" alone, you apply to CGL and rank into it. Set your preferences deliberately, because allocation follows that order strictly. The stage-by-stage breakdown lives on our SSC CGL exam pattern page, and the full exam hub is at SSC CGL.

Route 2: SSC MTS and SSC Stenographer

Multi Tasking Staff is the department's matriculation-level entry: Pay Level 1 (₹18,000–₹56,900), age 18 to 25 for most posts, with a subset advertised for 18 to 27. Selection is a two-session computer-based test — numerical and reasoning ability in the first, general awareness and English in the second, with negative marking only in the second. The physical tests that appear in SSC MTS notifications attach to Havaldar posts in Customs and Narcotics, not to MTS posts in the Income Tax Department. See SSC MTS for the current cycle.

Stenographer Grade II posts sit at Pay Level 4 and are filled through the SSC Stenographer examination — 12th pass eligibility, age 18 to 27, an objective test followed by a shorthand skill test at 80 words per minute. Shorthand speed is a months-long skill, not something to start after the result. See SSC Stenographer.

Route 3: UPSC Civil Services — the IRS entry

The department's Group A officer cadre is the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), entered only through the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree with an age band of 21 to 32 for the general category, and selection runs through Prelims, Mains and the personality test, followed by service allocation on rank and preference.

A directly recruited IRS officer joins as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax at Pay Level 10 — a rank above the Income Tax Officer that a CGL Inspector spends years reaching. From there the ladder runs Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, Additional Commissioner, Commissioner, Principal Commissioner, Chief Commissioner and Principal Chief Commissioner, up to Member and Chairman of the CBDT.

Route 4: sports quota recruitment

This is the largest category the department advertises in its own name, and the one most people never hear about. Regional offices recruit meritorious sportspersons directly into Group C posts — typically Tax Assistant, Stenographer Grade II and MTS — under the government's sports quota rules.

What makes it distinctive:

  • No written examination. Shortlisting is on the merit of your sporting record, in the preference order the notification sets: representing India in a recognised international competition ranks above State, UT, University or State school representation.
  • Only listed disciplines count. Each notification names the recognised sports and games it will accept, and certificates must come from the precise issuing authority prescribed. A certificate in the wrong format from the wrong authority is treated as invalid, not as a shortfall to be fixed later.
  • Skill tests still apply. Tax Assistant candidates take the data entry test and Stenographer candidates the shorthand test. MTS selection rests on the sports merit list and document verification.
  • Extra age relaxation — five years for meritorious sportspersons, ten for SC/ST candidates in the category.

Because each region advertises separately, on its own website and on its own timetable, a candidate eligible under this quota should be watching several regional sites, not one.

Route 5: departmental canteen posts

Every large Income Tax office runs a non-statutory departmental canteen, and its staff are Group C government employees. Posts such as Canteen Attendant, Cook, Halwai-cum-Cook and Canteen Manager are advertised locally by the regional office when a post falls vacant.

These notices are the reason a 10th-pass candidate can hold an Income Tax Department job. A typical Canteen Attendant notification asks for matriculation, sets an age band around 18 to 25 with the usual relaxations, places the post at Pay Level 1, and selects through shortlisting on matriculation marks, a short objective written test and a practical skill test with document verification. Vacancy counts are small — single digits is normal — and the application window is short.

They also carry the least competition per vacancy of anything in this guide, precisely because they are advertised on one regional website rather than by a national commission. You can see the live listings on our Income Tax Department jobs page.

Route 6: compassionate appointment, deputation and consultants

  • Compassionate appointment — a welfare provision for dependants of departmental employees who die in harness or retire on medical grounds, handled internally by each region within the ceiling government rules allow. It is not open recruitment and is never advertised as such.
  • Deputation posts — some specialised and senior positions are filled by officers already in government service, moving in on deputation. The notices are real vacancies but only serving government employees can apply.
  • Consultants and short-term engagements — directorates and processing centres periodically engage retired officers or professionals on contract. These are fixed-term, non-pensionable engagements at a consolidated fee, not government posts, and the notification always says so.

Income Tax posts you cannot apply for at all

This trips up more aspirants than any other point. Several of the department's best-known designations have no direct recruitment and are reached only by promotion:

  • Income Tax Officer (ITO) — Group B gazetted, reached from Inspector after clearing the departmental examination and waiting out the seniority list. Officers who clear the departmental exam early often make ITO in a few years; others wait considerably longer.
  • Senior Tax Assistant — a promotion post above Tax Assistant.
  • Office Superintendent, Administrative Officer and the Group A ranks above ACIT — filled by promotion, with a share of Assistant Commissioner posts reserved for promotees from the Group B cadre.

If you see an advertisement for a "direct Income Tax Officer exam", it is either a coaching product describing SSC CGL loosely, or a scam.

Age is always computed on the cutoff date stated in the notification, not the date you fill the form. Standard relaxations apply on the upper limit: five years for SC/ST, three for OBC, ten for PwBD (thirteen and fifteen when combined with OBC and SC/ST respectively), three years after deducting service rendered for ex-servicemen, and five years for meritorious sportspersons in sports quota recruitment. Every route requires Indian citizenship or one of the specific eligible nationality categories the notification lists.

Salary and the promotion ladder

Basic pay is only the starting point. Gross pay adds dearness allowance, house rent allowance keyed to the class of your posting city, and transport allowance; deductions for the National Pension System and income tax bring the in-hand figure back down. As a rough guide, an Income Tax Inspector at Level 7 sees gross pay in the ₹65,000–₹80,000 band depending on city, with in-hand pay lower. Two Inspectors of identical seniority in different cities can differ by ten thousand rupees a month on HRA alone.

The two career ladders look like this:

  • From Inspector — Income Tax Inspector → Income Tax Officer (Group B gazetted, via departmental exam) → Assistant Commissioner → Deputy Commissioner and upward. Reaching Assistant Commissioner by promotion is realistic; how far beyond depends heavily on the age at which you joined.
  • From the Group C posts — MTS → Tax Assistant → Senior Tax Assistant → Office Superintendent or Inspector, each step through a mix of departmental examination, seniority and available vacancies. Several serving Inspectors entered the department as MTS.

What the work actually involves

Postings differ enormously, and it is worth knowing what you are signing up for:

  • Assessment charges — scrutiny of returns, notices, and processing under a largely faceless system that routes cases to officers anywhere in the country.
  • TDS wing — compliance work with employers, banks and other deductors.
  • Investigation wing — surveys and search operations. Field-heavy, unpredictable hours, and the wing most people picture when they imagine the job — though only a minority of staff serve in it at any time.
  • Systems, processing centres and exemptions — technology-facing and specialised charges, including the centralised processing of returns.

How to track vacancies without missing the window

The three official sources that matter:

  • ssc.gov.in — for CGL, MTS and Stenographer notifications, plus the post-wise vacancy breakup when it is published. An Income Tax Inspector vacancy is announced here, inside the CGL notification, and nowhere else.
  • upsc.gov.in — for the Civil Services Examination.
  • incometaxindia.gov.in and the individual regional websites — for sports quota, canteen, deputation and consultant notices. Regional sites are where these appear first; the national site does not always mirror them promptly.

Aggregators, this site included, exist to alert you — not to replace the notification. Before you spend money or weeks of preparation, open the official PDF and read it yourself. Our guide on how to read a government job notification walks through what to check, and upcoming exams tracks the cycles above.

Red flags worth knowing

  • No genuine recruitment charges an agent. Fees, where they exist, are paid through the official portal only.
  • "Direct ITO recruitment" does not exist. Nor does direct recruitment to any promotion post.
  • Certificates cannot be fixed later. Sports and category certificates in the wrong format from the wrong authority are rejected, not returned for correction.
  • Verify every notice on an official domain. Regional Income Tax sites are government domains; a recruitment "notification" circulating only on social media is not one. Our guide on spotting fake job notifications covers the tells.

A realistic plan, depending on where you stand

  • Graduate, under 30 — SSC CGL is your primary route, with UPSC CSE as the parallel track if you have the runway for it. Start with quantitative aptitude and English, and treat the data entry test as compulsory practice if Tax Assistant is in your preference list.
  • 12th pass — SSC Stenographer, if you are willing to build shorthand speed over months. It is the least crowded skilled route into the department.
  • 10th pass — SSC MTS as the national route, and regional canteen notices as the low-competition one. Watch your region's website directly.
  • A serious sporting record — the sports quota is by far your best odds, and it needs no written exam. Get your certificates issued in the prescribed formats now, before a notification appears with a three-week window.

The takeaway

"Income Tax Department vacancy" is not one thing. It covers a national graduate exam, a matriculation-level exam, a civil services rank, a sports quota with no written test, and a handful of ten-vacancy notices from a single city office. The Income Tax posts behind those routes run from Multi Tasking Staff and Canteen Attendant at Pay Level 1 to Assistant Commissioner at Level 10, and no two are entered the same way. Identify which of the six routes your qualification, age and record actually fit, then watch the one or two official sources that carry it. Most candidates lose out not on merit but on never having seen the notification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Income Tax Department release its own vacancy notification?

For most posts, no. Inspector, Tax Assistant, Stenographer and MTS vacancies in the department are advertised and filled by the Staff Selection Commission through SSC CGL, SSC Stenographer and SSC MTS, and Group A officer posts are filled by UPSC through the Civil Services Examination. The department itself issues notifications directly only for sports quota recruitment, departmental canteen posts, compassionate appointments, deputation posts and short-term consultant engagements — and those come from the 18 regional Principal Chief Commissioner offices, not from a single national portal.

What is the difference between an Income Tax Inspector and an Income Tax Officer?

Income Tax Inspector is a Group B non-gazetted post at Pay Level 7 that is directly recruited through SSC CGL. Income Tax Officer (ITO) is the Group B gazetted post above it, and there is no direct recruitment for it at all — you reach it by promotion from Inspector after clearing the departmental examination and waiting for a vacancy in your seniority list, which typically takes several years.

Can a 10th pass candidate apply for Income Tax Department vacancies?

Yes, for two kinds of post. Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) requires matriculation and is filled through the SSC MTS examination. Departmental canteen posts such as Canteen Attendant, advertised locally by a regional office, also require matriculation. Both sit at Pay Level 1. Every other route — Tax Assistant, Stenographer, Inspector, IRS — needs at least a 12th pass or a bachelor's degree.

Is there a direct exam to become an Income Tax Officer?

No. Any advertisement or coaching claim offering a "direct ITO exam" is misleading. The two genuine entry points to an officer career in the department are SSC CGL for Income Tax Inspector, which leads to ITO by promotion, and the UPSC Civil Services Examination for the Indian Revenue Service, which starts you as an Assistant Commissioner — a rank above ITO.

What is the age limit for Income Tax Department vacancies?

It varies by post, and is always calculated on the cutoff date printed in that notification, not the day you apply. Broadly: Income Tax Inspector 18–30, Tax Assistant and Stenographer Grade II 18–27, MTS 18–25 (a subset of posts run to 27), canteen posts usually 18–25, and IRS through the Civil Services Examination 21–32. Standard relaxations apply on top — five years for SC/ST, three for OBC, ten for PwBD, and five for meritorious sportspersons in sports quota recruitment.

How many Income Tax Inspector vacancies come out each year?

The number is not fixed and is not known when the SSC CGL notification first appears. SSC announces a combined total across all CGL posts and departments, then publishes the post-wise and department-wise breakup later in the cycle, after indents are received. Treat any specific Inspector vacancy figure quoted before that breakup is published as an estimate.

What does an Income Tax Inspector earn?

The post sits at Pay Level 7 of the 7th CPC matrix, with a basic pay starting at ₹44,900 and a band running to ₹1,42,400. With dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance, gross pay commonly lands in the ₹65,000–₹80,000 range depending on the city class of your posting, and in-hand pay after NPS and tax deductions is lower than that. HRA is the single biggest reason two Inspectors of the same seniority take home different amounts.

Do sports quota recruitments in the Income Tax Department have a written exam?

No written examination. Shortlisting is done on the merit of your sporting achievements, in the order of preference set out in the notification — international representation for India ranks above State or University representation. Tax Assistant and Stenographer Grade II candidates then face a qualifying skill test (data entry or shorthand), while MTS selection rests on the sports merit list and document verification alone. Sports certificates must be issued by the exact authority the notification names; anything else is rejected outright.

Is there an application fee for Income Tax Department recruitment?

It depends entirely on the route. SSC and UPSC examinations charge their own fee, with exemptions for women and SC/ST/PwBD/ex-servicemen candidates. Departmental recruitments run by regional offices — sports quota and canteen posts — have frequently carried no fee at all. The notification is the only authority on this, and no genuine recruitment ever asks you to pay an agent, a consultant, or anyone outside the official payment gateway.
