An MBBS degree is required for every Medical Officer post in government service, a category with recruitment channels distinct from the general SSC/UPSC administrative exams. UPSC's Combined Medical Services (CMS) exam recruits doctors into Central Health Services, Railways, and municipal corporations in Delhi; state health departments run their own Medical Officer recruitment, typically through a state PSC or a dedicated health recruitment board; ESIC recruits MBBS graduates into its hospital network; and the armed forces medical corps takes MBBS graduates through the Short Service Commission (Medical) route.

CMS-track recruitment is written-exam based — an objective paper covering general medicine, surgery, gynaecology and preventive/social medicine — while a number of state-level Medical Officer posts are filled through direct interview and merit-list processes without a separate written stage, since the MBBS degree itself is treated as sufficient technical qualification. A crucial branch point for MBBS graduates is NEET-PG: it is not required for entry-level Medical Officer posts, but is mandatory for postgraduate specialisation, which in turn is the qualification behind higher-grade Specialist and Consultant posts in government hospitals. Registration with the National Medical Commission (or the relevant State Medical Council) is a universal prerequisite before any government medical post can be joined.
